The LRTI is a stand-alone, portable binocular, hand-held, battery-operated style instrument used to observe/orient, detect and identify targets, conduct surveillance and assist in engaging targets during all lighting conditions. It can be used under conditions of limited visibility and battlefield obscurants such as smoke, fog, and sandstorms. This binocular will provide vision for long-range observation and reconnaissance. The LRTI shall be able to detect man-sized targets at a range of 3,500 meters. This binocular thermal imager will replace the SOPHIE thermal system.
The SOPHIE is a low weight, multi-application
binocular bi-ocular thermal imager. The SOPHIE thermal imager is equally suitable for hand-held and tripod-mounted observation tasks.
Detect targets out to 6-10 Km
Power Rqmts: 1 BT-70477 Nickel-Metal Hydride rechargeable
This item has been replaced by the AN/PAS-22 Long Range Thermal Imager.
The Thermal Weapon Sight (TWS) is a lightweight, low power, high performance forward looking infrared (FLIR) device that will augment existing crew-served night vision sights. TWS is completely passive and although primarily designed for target detection and engagement with individual and crew-served weapons, it can also be utilized for all weather surveillance. The U.S. Marine Corps is procuring both the Medium Weapon Thermal Sight (AN/PAS-13B (V) 2) and the Heavy Weapon Thermal Sight (AN/PAS-13B (V)3). The MWTS can effectively engage targets out to 1000 meters while the HWTS can effectively engage targets out to 2000 meters.
The MWTS will be mounted to the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) and M240G Medium Machine Gun. The HWTS is intended to be mounted to the M2 .50 cal Heavy Machine Gun, and MK19 40mm Machine Gun.
These items are being replaced by the AN/PAS-13D (V) 2 Medium Weapon Thermal Sight (MWTS) and (V) 3 Heavy Weapon Thermal Sight (HWTS)
The Javelin System is a man-portable, fire-and-forget, medium-range antitank weapon system consisting of the Command Launch Unit (CLU) and the Round. The CLU's Imaging infrared system is used to detect targets during conditions of poor visibility and night operations. The round consists of the fire-and-forget missile and the discardable Launch Tube Assembly (LTA). The fire-and-forget capability increases the gunners ability to survive and continue fighting. The Javelin can kill a target in excess of 2000 meters. In addition, the missile has two gunner-selectable flight modes. The top attack mode allows the missile to impact on top of the target and the direct attack mode allows the missile to fly more directly at the target. The Javelin has a "soft launch" for minimized launch signature and fireing from enclosure capability. An elevated trajectory, combined with tandem, shaped-charge warheads, optimizes the Javelin's lethality against modern tanks.

The IWNS-T is a clip-on thermal sight that will be used in conjunction with the RCO on the M16A4 service rifle and M4 carbine. The IWNS-T will attach in front of the RCO to the MIL-STD-1913 rail system, while maintaining zero. This thermal device is a portable, battery operated, electro-optical sight used to loacte and engage targets during day, night, and other adverse conditions such as light rain, light snow, and dry smoke.
Weapon Platforms: All versions of the M-16 and M-4 Carbines
The MRTB is a stand-alone, portable binocular, hand-held, battery-operated style instrument used to observe/orient, detect and identify targets, conduct surveillance and assist in engaging targets during all lighting conditions. It can be used under conditions of limited visibility and battlefield obscurants such as smoke, fog, and sandstorms. This binocular will provide vision and range finding capabilities for tactical-range observation and machine gun fire direction and control. The MRTB operates to detect man-sized targets (upright, moving tactically) at a range of 1,800 meters in clear air and 550 meters though obscurants.
